Baby: Converse Booties in the Round
DCFN0015This is XAlleyKatX’s Converse style baby booties pattern worked in the round. I didn’t come up with it, and credit her completely to the amazing construction, I just hate seaming, and thought I’d write something up for others that are also allergic to this particular thing. I have no idea why my sport weight yarn on smaller needles give the same gauge as the original pattern’s worsted weight on bigger. It is a mystery, but one I am happy for.

Size
Um. I don’t know?

Material
– Bomull Sport by Gjestal (100% mercerized cotton, 50 grams, 100 metres/109 yards), 1 skein of each colour
– needles, 3.5mm/US#4.

Gauge
6 sts and 9-ish rows per inch or 24 sts and 26 rows per four inches/decimetre.

Directions
CO 26 sts with your preferred toe up cast on. I use Judy’s magic cast on. Purl one row before working the pattern.

1: k1, yo, k11, [yo, k1] twice, yo, k11, yo, k1.
2, 4, 6, 8, 10: p all, and when you reach the yo, p in the back of the stitch.
3: k2, yo, k11, yo, k2, yo, k3, yo, k11, yo, k2.
5: k3, yo, k11, [yo, k4] twice, yo, k11, yo, k3.
7: k4, yo, k11, yo, k5, yo, k6, yo, k11, yo, k4
9: k5, yo, k11, [yo, k7] twice, yo, k11, yo, k5.

11, 12: k all with CC.
13: k all with MC.
14, 15, 16: k all with CC.
17: k with MC.
18: k19 with MC, k13 with CC, k19 with MC

Shape Instep as follows, and note that for your first row only the CC yarn will be on the other side, but as you just attached the yarn you can sneakily use your hopefully long yarn tail to k the CC portion this one row. The rest is worked back and forth, remember to strand the yarn when needed!

1: k19 with MC, k10 with CC, SKP with CC, turn.
2: sl 1, p7 with CC, p2tog with CC, turn.
3: sl 1, k7 with CC, SKP with CC, turn.
4: sl 1, p7 with CC, p2tog with CC, turn.
5: sl 1, k7 with CC, sl 1, k1 with MC, psso, turn
6: sl 1, p7 with CC, p2tog with MC, turn.
7: sl 1, k7 with CC, SKP with MC, turn.
8: sl 1, p1 with MC, p5 with CC, p1 with MC, p2tog with MC, turn.
9: sl 1, k2 with MC, k3 with CC, k2 with MC, SKP, turn.

Switch to just MC and continue as follows.

10: sl 1, p7, p2tog, turn.
11: sl 1, k7, SKP, turn.
12: sl 1, p7, p2tog, turn.
13: sl 1, k7, SKP, turn.
14: sl 1, p7, p2tog, turn.
15: sl 1, k7, SKP, knit to the end of the row.
16: p 21, p 2 tog, purl to the end of the row.

You should have 36 sts at this point. You need to rearrange the stitches to work the entire rest of the sides in one piece. Start with putting the 7 sts of the front (from slipped stitch edge to slipped stitch edge) on a scrap piece of yarn. Arrange the rest of the stitches onto a circular needle or several DPNs. Start working at the beginning of the right side of the bootie.

1: k1, ssk, yo, k to last 3 sts, yo, k2tog, k1.
2: sl 1, p all.
3: sl 1, ssk, k to last 3 sts, k2tog, k1.
4: sl 1, p all.
5: sl 1, ssk, yo, k to last 3 sts, yo, k2tog, k1.
6: sl 1, p all.
7: sl 1, ssk k to last 3 sts, k2tog, k1.
8: sl 1, p all.
9: sl 1, ssk, yo, k to last 3 sts, yo, k2tog, k1.
10: sl 1, p all.
11: sl 1, ssk k to last 3 sts, k2tog, k1.
12-13: k all.

Bind off and then knit the tongue of the bootie as follows:

1, 3, 5, 7: sl 1, k all.
2, 4, 6: sl 1, p all.
8, 9: k all.

Bind off and you’re done! For laces, work 15 inches of i-cord or a single crochet chain.
